Etapa 6: una de piratas en el Mont Saint-Michel y Sant-Malo

Si te gustan las películas de princesas prometidas, de anillos y sus señores dueños o de piratas, tienes que venir al Mont Saint-Michel y a la ciudad de Saint-Malo. Entre la Normandía del desembarco y la Bretaña costera de levantan estas dos maravillas dignas de ser visitadas.

Desde Rennes y antes de ‘piratear’ en Saint-Malo nos acercamos a la abadía más impresionante que jamás hemos visto, y ya son unas cuantas. Según te acercas a ese monte de San Miguel esperas al grandioso pero nunca lo que te sorprende a kilómetros de distancia entre maizales. Sencillamente alucinante. Te asusta pensar quiénes y por qué construyeron tan maravillosa obra. ¿Qué pretendían aquellos monjes cuando se las ingeniaron para recogerse a la meditación en este lugar?

No creo que aquellos monjes que homenajearon al arcángel San Miguel lo hicieran pensando que actualmente el lugar es uno de los más visitados de Francia, con más de tres millones de visitantes cada año. En medio de la nada, en medio del mar y en la desembocadura del río Couesnon, aparece la casa que bien pudiera ser el palacio de ‘La princesa prometida’ y la montaña donde escondieron el anillo de aquel señor tan extraño.

Le Mont Saint-Michel, patrimonio de la humanidad, me sorprendió cuando lo vi por primera vez en un Tour, hace ya al menos 30 años. Ahora con @Una_de_50 me ha gustado aún más porque ella, además de sentirse impresionada, se ha imaginado una noche de tormenta en la abadía y se ha asustado. Yo también me he visto incompetente para salvar a la princesa prometida y tampoco capaz de convertirme en Íñigo Montoya y vengar la muerte de mi padre. Da terror imaginártelo hace siglos y en una noche de truenos, relámpagos y centellas. Pero en estos tiempos deberíais montaros un viaje de aventuras para ver la magnitud de Le Mont Saint-Michel. Y después de salvar al mundo, deberíais ir a por los ‘piratas’ que intentar saltar las murallas de Saint-Malo.

Siempre que me hablan de algún viaje a Francia les recomiendo este amurallado fortín de la Bretaña, quizás porque yo fui y sigo siendo un poco pirata. A la princesa prometida que rescaté de la abadía la terminé de agasajar en el intramuros de Saint-Malo. Los nativos de lo que fue una isla y después Tierra ganada al mar, hartos de bretones y franceses, buscaron su lema que hice mío la primera vez que crucé una de sus puertas: “Ni francés ni bretón, que soy independiente malvino”.

Cuando recorres su muralla te imaginas las veces que los nativos tuvieron que defenderse de los acosos de salvajes que pretendieron quedarse con su ciudad. Desde la altura de esa muralla cada mirada es una fotografía y te imaginas una escena de corsarios bebiendo calvados e intentando después huir con algún botín robado. Es imposible no sentirte Jack Sparrow en ‘Piratas de Saint-Malo’.

Ver ahora la ciudad de Saint-Malo tan perfectamente conservada te lleva a imaginarte cómo la construyeron… pero no. Saint-Malo también tiene historia moderna y fue fortín nazi tras el desembarco en Normandía. Como los alemanes, bajo el mando del general Von Aulock, no se rendían, los americanos decidieron bombardearla con napalm y devastar la ciudad. Costó dos décadas reconstruirla.

Pero del desembarco de Normandía ya os contaremos otro día. Hoy os diré que Le Mont Saint-Michel y Saint-Malo son dos lugares que, como París, ‘vaut bien une messe’.
